           Confessions:  Saturday 11-12 & 5.45 -6.15

I had spent some time before Easter reading a small book about the life of St Bernadette. It was a very old book, written in 1912 and was the very first book ever written in English to explain what had happened in Lourdes some years earlier. One of the phrases that came across to me was the somewhat sad conversation between Our Lady & Bernadette   - that informed Bernadette that she couldn’t be promised happiness in this life bit she could in the next.

Well, Lourdes is meant to be a ‘pilgrimage’ – and this can involve hardship and difficulties. I just hoped that the worst we could expect was rain and bad weather  - well be got a total soaking on the last afternoon – but the many other things that ripped into the lives of the helpers could not have been imagined.

And in spit of everything ‘Old Nick’ threw at us, our youngsters had one of the happiest and best pilgrimage/holidays you could have imagined. The laughed and played  /  eat loads and sang for England / played a full and important part of all our services and Masses  /  have an absolute hoot of a time at Bingo and the Royal Wedding Fancy Dress Party……….   It is all for them and God blessed them with a holiday with Our Lady that they will never forget.

All our thanks to everyone for your love, help and care.

The Road to Emmaus journey was another that had ‘doom & gloom’ all around it and ended with the ultimate in a happy ending. ‘Their eyes, downcast’ … what a powerful phrase – they couldn’t lift them up to see the Lord beside them…… their hearts were so heavy. It was only when Jesus broke the bread, just as at the Last Supper and every time we sat Mass together that their eyes were opened and they were able to recognise with their eyes and hearts just who was always with them.

I feel sure that this is one of the secrets of Easter, revealed only to those who want to believe  --  that the Lord is always with us  - in our deepest sorrows and disappointments and in our greatest joys and happiness’s. He was with us (with the Helpers)in all their heart aches and sorrows in Lourdes and in the joys off the week  - and never for a second was he absent  --  Lourdes and Emmaus had a lot in common this year and God’s love shone through all the clouds and blessed us all with great love, joy and support.
