Parishes within St John Southworth Deanery                                                                                July 2013

Dear Parishioners,

I write to you on behalf of the priests of our deanery who met recently to discuss how best we may meet the challenges that the increasing age and decreasing number of clergy presents to the parishes of the deanery, especially those in rural areas situated miles from neighbouring parishes.

Particularly we looked at what could be done if a parish priest unexpectedly fell seriously ill at a weekend when all priests are busy in their own churches and no visiting priest is available to help.

We decided that the only option is to look to the resources available within the parish community.

Most parishes already have experience, on some weekdays, of a service of Word and Communion, known to most of us as a Eucharistic Service.  We propose to select and train a small number of parishioners from each parish as Prayer Leaders who with existing Readers and Eucharistic Ministers would be prepared to lead services of Word and Communion at the Saturday Vigil or Sunday Masses in emergencies where a priest is not available.

I stress that this arrangement is intended to cover emergency situations only, where a priest cannot be had to celebrate Sunday Mass.

Training sessions will be held in Sacred Heart and St. Edward’s Darwen on Thursday 19th September and at St. Mary’s Langho on Wednesday 25th September at 7.30 in the evening.

In the Lord  Monsignor John Corcoran  (Dean of our Deanery)

CANONISATION of Pope John Paul 2nd and Pope John 23rd is likely to take place in the late autumn of this year. Here we have 2 popes in our lifetime about to be declared saints …  a real rarity. Gerry Flynn, one of our parishioners, who runs Enjoy Travel, is hoping to run a trip to Rome for this occasion. This would include flights, transfers, dinner, bed and breakfast in a hotel, coach travel etc… The date has not yet been fixed by Pope Francis, but we think it is imminent. Gerry is going country wide for this trip and the more … the less the price…!! We will give more news, when we have a date, but please have a word with Fr Jude or with Gerry on 504970 to know more. I recall my mum went to Rome for the canonisation of Pius X11 in 1955ish.. she did it on £25 !!! the days!

If you end up in EURO Lands this summer  --  don’t throw away your lose coins / shrapnel  --  please bring them home & pop them into the HCPT Lourdes buckets…  we take loads of small coins at Easter,, all adds up!!! Enjoy the sunshine.

CAFOD AND WASTE PAPER IS NO MORE!!!!! BUT….. PLAN B … everyone has to have a Plan B !!  Now we are collecting DRINK CANS…. Biscuits Tins etc… and ‘OLD & SPARE WIRE’

It’s that time of year for ‘I Believe, Action Cambodia Today’.

CHARITY SHOP FOR OUR CAMBODIA CHARITY

Once again we are preparing for our charity shop, which this year will be at 14-16 Lord St. West, from Monday, 14th October until Saturday 19th October. We are now asking you for help in supplying us with goods to sell in the shop. Once again we shall be having a different theme each day and as a result would be pleased to receive small electrical goods, box games and sportswear,   keep-fit equipment , men and women’s hats, the posher  the better , along with fashion accessories such as jewellery and handbags and gardening equipment etc.

We are also looking for clothes, bric-a-brac, shoes and bags, household furnishings, small items of furniture such as coffee tables, cds and dvds, BUT NO VIDEOS AND CASSETTES. If you can help with any of these things please bring them along to either of our churches.

There are also two wardrobes available in the Parish Hall at the Good Shepherd. They are priced at £20 each and could be of particular interest to a student moving into rental accommodation this term.

Please remember our Parish Centre  -  if you are having a ‘Family Do’ or celebration; 21st, 40th   60th Birthday Party etc..  A celebration after a Baptism / Funeral / Wedding evening then please think to Hire our Centre for your Party. Pop in after Mass 4 a drink & a look in Tel: 661193 to enquire/book.

NEW REPONSES AT MASS

Father:  The Lord be with you.      Our New Response:  AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT

The New I Confess                           I confess to almighty God

And to you, my brothers and sisters,

That I have greatly sinned,

In my thoughts and in my words, In what I have done

And in what I have failed to do,

Through my fault, through my fault

Through my most grievous fault.

Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, All the angels and saints,

And you, my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord my God

THE GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,  you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,  in the glory of God the Father. Amen
.

THE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen
.

SANCTUS

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks
to the Lord our God.
People: It is right and just

People:
A – We proclaim your death, O Lord,
and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.

PRAYER FOR PEACE after the Our FatherLord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles, Peace I leave you,  my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will.  Who live and reign for ever and ever.

LAMB OF GOD

All: Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.

The Lord be with you    Response:    AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT
