Some helpful reading from the YOUCAT is from pages 162 to 179  (or if you go by the Yellow circle numbers it is 279 to 320. The ‘meetings are more thoughtful & prayerful than anything else. No one will feel ‘threatened or worried’ at them. No one will be ‘made to speak out loud’ !! But we do have time for shared thoughts.. The sessions will last around 30 minutes and no more than 40.

THE ICON OF ST JOHN SOWTHWORTH

Our picture of St. John Southworth is not an icon in the strict sense, but it is an invitation to enter into a tradition of Faith, a relationship with the Church throughout the centuries and a personal relationship with the God who is the source and the focus of that Faith.

Look at the picture and see an ordinary looking man.

See a man who has responded in Faith to a call, a vocation, from God, to serve God as a priest for the sake of others at a time when such a life would almost inevitably mean living in fear of arrest, torture and ultimately horrific execution.

See in the gold, the promise of life in heaven.

See in the richness of the red also a reflection of the majesty of heavenly glory, but also of the rich and fertile blood of martyrs.

See in his face a look of gentle love for others and a concern for the Faith that he lived and was prepared to die for so that they might have the ministries of a priest.

See in his raised hand a desire to bless and to pass on the gifts of God to others.

See in the crowd of other witnesses around his head others who shared not only his Faith but his persecution and steadfastness unto death.

See in them a mix of people, male and female, lay and religious, young and old.

See in the view of Salmesbury the reminder of his family home and the place where the Faith was lived, shared and nurtured.

See in the ruined gatehouse of Whalley Abbey the monastic tradition which had supported the Faith in this area, not just in terms of the Spiritual Life, but in the practical lived out experience of Christian Charity; of welcome to strangers, food for the hungry, shelter for the weary and healing for the sick.

See in the local scenes of Clitheroe Castle and Pendle Hill the spread of Faith from the mighty places to the forest huts, from the wealthy and influential to the poor and humble.

See in the image of him celebrating Holy Mass the image of the cross with which he was prepared to unite with his own life and death.

See in the image of him celebrating the Sacrifice of the Mass, the centrality of the Sacred Host which gave focus to his life and Faith, his ministry, his sufferings and death and his hope for his church and for eternal life.

See in the image of the Tyburn gallows the image of his own gateway to heaven and sanctity.

See too, in the purple haze not only the sense of sorrow, but also the hope of things still to come. It is the purple of Advent and Lent promising a new Incarnation and Resurrection in our time.

UPDATE ON CAMBODIA,PLEASE READ.

1)      We have received a series of short reports on the university students being sponsored by members of the parish. Fr.Greg has assured us that more detailed information will be available soon to the sponsors.

Mr. Suen Samnang is doing well in his third year at The Royal University of Phnom Penh. He is studying Agriculture.

Ms. Srey Peu has just finished a two year secretarial course at Don Bosco Vocational School. She is now working in the Finance Office at Jesuit Service in Phnom Penh.

Ms. Heng Panith has just completed her final exam of a four year Management Course at Norton University. At the time of writing she was awaiting her results.

Ms.Uch Sohim has completed half of her four year course in Management Studies at The National Institute of Management, and is said to be doing well.

Fr. Greg has asked if we will continue to support the students continuing their studies and has asked if we will take on two more. We shall give you the details when they arrive.

2)      Who bought the lawnmower?   Someone bought a lawnmower from the back of St. Alban’s a few weeks ago from the stock we had for the Charity Shop. We do have the grass box and manual for it. So, if you bought it please collect the grass box and manual from Sal at the bookstall......no charge.

3)      Re-cycled clothes.     When we closed the Charity Shop some of the clothes that were left over were taken for re-cycling. We were pleasantly surprised to find that this was useful way of making money for our charity. If you have any old clothes for re-cycling please bring them to the back of church and we will clear them away each week and take them to the dealer.

Plan ‘B’     As you will know we have over the past year been trying to raise money for a new classroom at our school in Cambodia. We have succeeded in this but unfortunately there is a problem in buying the land. At first it seemed as if the plan would be scrapped but now we have received information about a plan to build two classrooms, as the number of pupils continues to increase . As any building plan is on hold for the moment we have agreed to pay for the construction of a fish pond for the village so that fish can be trapped and kept for the people to eat after the flood waters have subsided at the end of the rainy season.  There is a serious problem of malnutrition out there as too many people are restricted to a diet of rice.  This is a big improvement for the village and is your gift to them. Many thanks.

NEW REPONSES AT MASS

Father:  The Lord be with you.      Our New Response:  AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT

The New I Confess                           I confess to almighty God

And to you, my brothers and sisters,

That I have greatly sinned,

In my thoughts and in my words, In what I have done

And in what I have failed to do,

Through my fault, through my fault

Through my most grievous fault.

Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, All the angels and saints,

And you, my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord my God

THE GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,  you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,  in the glory of God the Father. Amen
.

THE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen
.

SANCTUS

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

LAMB OF GOD

All: Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.
