CONFESSIONS  Saturday 11  -  12

This Thursday is the Feast of All Saints, a Holyday of Obligation, when the church does ask us to attend Holy Mass. It marks the beginning of November when we remember the final destination both of our selves and those who have gone before us. During the month it is traditional to pray for the faithful departed. We have left sheets near the church exits for you to write the names of those of your family & friends who have died. Please return them  / or pop them in the basket on the altar. The sheets, representing our families, will remain on the altar during the month. In this simple way they will be prayed for at mass during the week and at the weekends.

Another simple tradition is to have Holy Mass offered for a loved one. It has been said to me more than once…  “How do I have a mass said for someone?”  Simply write the person’s name on a piece of paper  -  pop an offering into the envelope .. // how much ??  some type of folding money, I would suggest: Please then give it one of the priests or pop it through the presbytery letter box and the mass will be celebrated in due time .  If you had a particular day / date in mind, then write that as well.

WASTE PAPER  Many thanks to all who bring in Waste Paper :  You can bring it in Carrier bags / melon type boxes / strong cardboard boxes  etc….   The Church is usually open from around 8 am to 5 pm in the evening  (Side Door  - i.e. the bottom one near the presbytery)

To celebrate the Year of Faith, the parish is and has given to each family a ‘Catechism’ called “YOUCAT”.  Please God we are finding this book really helpful. I am finding it quite readable, it is in small manageable pieces with questions, answers and comments. We will hold monthly meetings to pray & discover more about out faith in – ‘The coming YEAR of FAITH’. The ‘meetings will be more thoughtful & prayerful than anything else. No one will feel ‘threatened or worried’ at them. No one will be ‘made to speak out loud’ !! God forbid!! They will take place on the FIRST & LAST Saturday of the month. We will have one at Good Shepherd Hall (next door to the church on Earl St) & the other in the Sacristy at St Alban’s. The Faith witnessed by the Lancashire Martyrs will be a part of our local heritage. We will focus on our patron St. John Southworth, an icon of whom will be used in major celebrations and will tour all parish churches. We have begun yesterday, Saturday (27th Oct) in the Sacristy at St Alban’s at 10am with our Session One on “Who is God”. A good place to begin. Next Saturday (Nov. 3rd) we will have the same topic at Good Shepherd Hall also beginning at 10am. The sessions will last around 30 minutes and no more than 40.

If your family didn’t get a YOUCAT last week: have a word with Fr Jude as I have acquired a few more.

A massive thanks to all the ‘shop helpers’ who did their bit each day and to all the parishioners who gave items & goods for the shop. It means we can do so much more for our adopted children in Cambodia.

A Message from the new Headteacher of Our Lady & St John

Our Lady & St John staff and pupils have now settled into our temporary school site. We have much to celebrate and also many new challenges to face as a school community and, as the new (Acting) Head teacher, I wanted to write to you to ask for your continued prayers and support.

This year’s GCSE results were very good indeed.  76% of students achieved an A* - C grade in 5 or more GCSEs; 51% achieved an A* - C grade in five or more GCSEs including English and Maths.  These are our best ever results a 13% increase on our results for the previous two years and exceeds both the targets set for us by the Government and the Local Authority.  This reflects the dedication and sustained hard work of staff and pupils and the wonderful support given by you, the parents and parishioners.  It demonstrates, once again, what can be achieved in our Catholic schools when parents, teachers and associate staff work in close partnership in the best interests of the children.

This year the school celebrates its Silver Jubilee.  It is twenty five years since the opening of Our Lady & St John Catholic College during which time we have seen over twenty thousand pupils educated at the College.  Later in the year we hope to invite you to celebrate Mass with us in thanksgiving at St Alban’s on 29th November at 7.30pm for all that has been achieved during those twenty five years. We are determined to build upon our examination success again with our current Year 11 pupils but I am also very keen to see every pupil make the very best of each and every opportunity during the coming academic year so that every House group will have much to celebrate.

Plans for our new school are well underway and there was a great deal of interest and excitement about the new building from parents and prospective pupils in year 6 who came to our recent Open Evening.  If you know of anyone who could not attend our Open Evening please let them know that they would still be most welcome to visit us here at our temporary site and that they can make an appointment to look around by simply contacting us on 01254 59055 or emailing the school at

Father:  The Lord be with you.      Our New Response:  AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT

The New I Confess                           I confess to almighty God

And to you, my brothers and sisters,

That I have greatly sinned,

In my thoughts and in my words, In what I have done

And in what I have failed to do,

Through my fault, through my fault

Through my most grievous fault.

Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, All the angels and saints,

And you, my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the Lord my God

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,  you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,  in the glory of God the Father. Amen

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks
to the Lord our God.
People: It is right and just

Priest: The mystery of faith.

A – We proclaim your death, O Lord,
and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.

PRAYER FOR PEACE after the Our FatherLord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles, Peace I leave you,  my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will.  Who live and reign for ever and ever.

All: Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.

The Lord be with you    Response:    AND WITH YOUR SPIRIT
