The story of the beggar man who was blind from birth and cured by Jesus on a Sabbath day, a fact that infuriated the Pharisees, has the content for a dozen sermons! The story starts and runs with controversy. Some thought that his blindness was a punishment for his or his parent’s sins! Sounds daft…  but then we are easily tempted to think that if we live a good life then ‘bad things or illnesses’ shouldn’t come our way.

Jesus often spoke about ‘LIGHT’ and that he was ‘the light’. Blindness is a kind of darkness, which I am sure none of us would want  -  I have just been to the eye-clinic this week and will have to go back at have some laser work to remove a film over my left eye.

We are taking 2 little lads to Lourdes this Easter who have extremely poor vision and our Helpers now are realising how much more they will have to ‘explain’ and ‘talk’ and ‘describe’ all the beauty of Lourdes so that the boys will then ‘see with their minds’ all that we see with our eyes.

The Blind man didn’t see Jesus (he heard & felt his touch) – it was only later when Jesus tracked him down that he actually saw him – and his response was “I believe and worshipped him”.

But he couldn’t keep begging and, in a sense, lost his ‘job’ – but then and now following Jesus will not always be easy. Happy Lent on this ‘Joyful Sunday’.

Fr Kevin O’Neil, known and loved by so many through his days at St Mary’s College died a week ago as I mentioned last week. I have not heard when there will be a memorial mass for him, but when I do I will let everyone know.
